Friends and Family Questionnaire Results January 2020

Friends & Family Questionnaire Results January 2020

In January we had a total of 19 responses to our Friends and Family Test questions.

We asked the question:

“How likely are you to recommend our GP practice to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?”

Your responses were:

  • 15 patients replied, EXTREMELY LIKELY
  • 2 patients replied, LIKELY
  • 1 patients replied, NEITHER LIKELY nor UNLIKELY
  • 1 patient replied, EXTREMELY UNLIKELY

11 patients told us why they were Extremely Likely to recommend us:

  • Always had excellent treatment and service here.
  • Fantastic staff, caring doctors and nurses and I love you xxx
  • Absolutely brilliant staff.
  • Doctors always ready to listen, even when busy. Receptionists are friendly, polite and professional in attitude and behaviour. Pharmacy is great.
  • Excellent service from Dr Barrett and the nurses, they couldn’t do more for me. Hardly and waiting time for appointments, most were the same day.
  • Phone call 8:30am, appointment 11am same day, excellent – well done to all.
  • Big, brilliant and amazing surgery, doctors and staff. Have helped me and my family stay well and happy.
  • Helpful, caring, lovely staff.
  • Marvellous service for years. Thank you to everyone.
  • Availability of appointments is good. Doctors listen and I didn’t feel rushed.
  • Excellent service.

2 patients answered the question:

“What could we do to improve the practice?”

  •  More doctor surgeries.
  • Stop taking on new patients, send drug dependent patients to specialist care, make 2 available times for patients to call and make an appointment I.E morning and after lunch. Adjust the poor attitude of receptionist staff and finally, stop lying about being able to provide heart monitoring equipment when all it would take is a phone call to a local pharmacy who have a number of these. Get your priorities right and give better care to the patients you have already...

Pendeen Surgery

The partners at Morrab Surgery wish to make clear that the sale of the building is solely a decision made by the owners of the building, Dr Daniel Kingston and Dr Caroline Fullick. Morrab surgery rents the building from the owners and has no desire, or plans to move from the current location.

NHS England and Kernow CCG are fully supportive and we are all committed to continuing to provide a medical practice for the community.

However, as it is now clearly the aim of the owners to sell the building, we now need to find suitable alternative accommodation within the village. If anyone knows of accommodation that they feel might be suitable please let us know.

Thankyou
Dr’s Neil Armstrong, Stewart Rutherfurd & Jane Martin (The Partners)

Dr Leannda Barrett

Friends & Family Questionnaire Results November 2019

We asked the question:

“How likely are you to recommend our GP practice to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?”

Your responses were:

  • 11 patients replied, EXTREMELY LIKELY
  • 3 patients replied, LIKELY
  • 0 patients replied, NEITHER LIKELY nor UNLIKELY
  • 1 patient replied, EXTREMELY UNLIKELY

4 patients told us why they were Extremely Likely to recommend us:

  • I have always been a patient of this surgery and how pleased I am to say I have great respect in Doctors and team. Thanks them all for being here. My very best for the future.
  • All staff are really friendly and professional.
  • They give the best possible care they can.
  • All staff, clinical & non-clinical are very helpful and professional.

6 patients answered the question:

“What could we do to improve the practice?”

  • Improve the pharmacy which is too small for the size of the practice. The chairs in reception aren't very comfortable. Nurses, doctors and reception staff are exceptionally good so no change needed there.
  • Please keep both practices open, Morrab Road and especially Pendeen. Continue current good service. Expand on it if possible. Booking my advance apts is helpful.
  • I think you are improving all the time just keep doing it.
  • Cut the very long waiting times to see a doctor, better telephone answering system, more receptionists.
  • Install software to allow on line appointment slots. Practice manager news updates on same site. Result..... relieve pressure on Reception.

Friends & Family Questionnaire Results December 2019

In October we had a total of 15 responses to our Friends and Family Test questions.

We asked the question:

“How likely are you to recommend our GP practice to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?”

Your responses were:

  • 27 patients replied, EXTREMELY LIKELY
  • 1 patients replied, LIKELY
  • 2 patients replied, NEITHER LIKELY nor UNLIKELY
  • 1 patient replied, EXTREMELY UNLIKELY

27 patients told us why they were Extremely Likely to recommend us:

  • They knew what they are doing to the patients. They have compassion, love, and professionalism. In my opinion they are excellent not only the Nurses but also the Doctors and the Staff too. Thank you for asking.
  • I have no problems
  • I can't think of any way to improve the practice as to my mind it's perfect
  • The practice is the best I have ever used so no need to improve. Reception staff are exceptional in particular.
  • Certain receptionists could do with a more pleasant, friendly tone of voice. Please introduce screens to show the name of the patient being called as it is almost impossible to hear your name being called when you have hearing problems. Other surgeries already use the screen system.
  • Excellent surgery.
  • Staff Very Friendly. Wonderful doctors
  • Brilliant service extremely polite and helpful, wonderful branch at Pendeen
  • All doctors and staff excellent, prompt service
  • Dr Armstrong - Excellent Pendeen Surgery - Very good for parking
  • I recommend this surgery at Penzance and Pendeen for the first class service in providing medication and appointments and the staff and reception
  • This surgery provides excellent care, all the staff are very good, most helpful
  • I have had excellent treatment at this surgery
  • Wonderful surgery and staff
  • Most of the receptionists are always friendly and helpful. Doctors are always helpful and keen to listen too
  • All the doctors have shown care and compassion to all our family. We are always treated quickly
  • The staff are always helpful and I can normally get an appointment quite quickly
  • The receptionists are very helpful. So are many nurses, especially the Lead Nurse and the Doctors are ok - Many Round the county say they can't easily get a GP appointment. One can here, relatively easily.
  • Everybody at Morrab Surgery is courteous, respectful and caring. I have seen two GPs -Dr Martin and Dr Rutherfurd. Both have been thorough and caring. Reception staffs are so helpful. Nurses are kind and efficient
  • Friendly and Helpful
  • Very good care at all times
  • Long-time patient at Morrab Surgery. Always treated well by the doctors and all the staff (for many years)

4 patients answered the question:“What could we do to improve the practice?”

  • We need a local practice, it’s so difficult to get to Penzance
  • No Family living in the area and do not tend to recommend health services anyway
  • total shambles, not enough staff, to many big wigs
  • To long waiting for an appointment. Shorter waiting times when at Penalverne

'Good' news for Morrab Surgery

We are pleased to share that after our last CQC inspection, on 4th December 2019, the surgery has been rated as 'Good'.

Dr Neil Armstrong, Senior Partner at Morrab Surgery, said: "We are delighted that the practice has been rated as Good following the recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection - reaffirming the high quality and safe patient care offered by our experienced team of clinicians, health professionals and support staff.

"The surgery has a very high patient satisfaction rating - much higher than the national average – and has extended the range of services offered to patients, improved access to them and enlarged the frontline team.

"We continue to offer all our existing services and it's business as usual.

"We are also pleased to announce that a new long-term lease has been signed for our branch surgery premises at Pendeen - securing medical and dispensing services for the local community."

Coronavirus - Information Information

Information about the virus

A coronavirus is a type of virus. As a group, coronaviruses are common across the world. Typical symptoms of coronavirus include fever and a cough that may progress to a severe pneumonia causing shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

Generally, coronavirus can cause more severe symptoms in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long-term conditions like diabetes, cancer and chronic lung disease.

Novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) is a new strain of coronavirus first identified in Wuhan City, China.

The Government and NHS are well prepared to deal with this virus.

You can help too.

Germs can live on some surfaces for hours.
To protect yourself and others:

  • Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze.
  • Bin the tissue, and to kill the germs, wash your hands with soap and water, or use a sanitiser gel.
  • If you have arrived back from China within 14 days follow the specific advice for returning travellers.

This is the best way to slow the spread of almost any germs, including Coronavirus.

Find out more at gov.uk/coronavirus

IMPORTANT! RE POTENTIAL COVID-19 or CORONA VIRUS EXPOSURE
– advice from Public Health England says -

Do not go to your surgery or casualty if at all possible!

If you have returned from these specific areas since February 19th, you should call NHS111 and self-isolate even if you do not have symptoms:

  • Iran
  • Specific lockdown areas in Northern Italy as designated by the Government of Italy
  • Special care zones in South Korea as designated by the Government of the Republic of South Korea
  • Hubei province (as previously noted)

If you have returned from these areas since February 19th and develop symptoms, however mild, you should self-isolate at home immediately and call NHS111.
You do not need to self-isolate if you have no symptoms.

  • Northern Italy (defined by a line above, and not including, Pisa, Florence and Rimini),
  • Vietnam
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Myanmar

Those who have returned from previously identified geographic areas within the past 14 days and develop symptoms,
however mild, should self-isolate at home immediately and call NHS111.

'Rescue Packs'

We are aware of some inaccurate information circulating (especially on social media) regarding special ‘rescue packs’ of antibiotics and oral steroids for patients with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (or even for those who don’t have these conditions).

We would like to reassure you that patients who suffer with severe respiratory conditions already have these in place (along with the instructions how to use them). Oral steroids are powerful medicines and any decision to use them would need careful evaluation by a prescriber, usually a doctor or respiratory specialist nurse.

The current advice is please do not contact your GP practice for a rescue pack unless this is something that has been previously agreed and prescribed by your medical team. You should continue to manage your condition in the usual way and if you feel you have symptoms of COVID-19, go to 111.nhs.uk/covid-19 before doing anything else.

We are aware of increasing requests for inhalers from patients who haven’t had them for a significant period of time. There is a risk of supply problems if inhalers are issued to people who don’t currently need them. GP practices will need to review requests on an individual basis and will only prescribe where there is current clinical need for an inhaler. If your condition changes in future and your GP thinks you need an inhaler it will be prescribed for you at that point.

At the moment, inhaler prescriptions are also being limited to one of each type of inhaler in order to make sure that all patients who need one can get one.

You should continue to manage your conditions in the usual way and if you feel you have symptoms of COVID-19, go to 111.nhs.uk/covid-19 or call 111 (online services should be used as a first choice) before doing anything else

Childhood Immunisations

On Good Morning Britain on 26.03.2020 incorrect information was shared suggesting that the immunisation programme was suspended.  This is not correct, it is very important to maintain good coverage of immunisations, particularly in the childhood programme.  To that end, we ask that you continue to make appointments with the Practice Nurse for your babies and pre-school children.

The secondary school age children's immunisations are currently under review (for those who would be due in the summer term).  We currently are not able to offer these

ROYAL CORNWALL HOSPITALS NHS TRUST PATIENT HOTLINE

This hotline is in place to field enquiries from patients who are on an elective management pathway (awaiting new or follow-up outpatient appointment, diagnostic or elective admission) and are concerned that their condition or symptoms are deteriorating.  Patients may have had their treatment postponed as part of the response to the Covid-19 crisis or simply be awaiting their first appointment or next steps in their treatment.

The key aim of the hotline is to:
(a) avoid patients having to return to their GP to raise concerns or expedite care
(b) ensure there is a clear route in for enquiries where patients are concerned about their condition
(c) help avoid patients coming to harm whilst on a waiting list.

The hotline can be contacted by phoning 0800 0357777 or emailing rcht.cornwall.patienthotline@nhs.net. Enquiries are then directed to the appropriate specialty for clinical review and appropriate action.

Please do not forward general enquiries about waiting times or Covid-19 queries to the hotline; they are experiencing many calls which are outside the scope of the service which is frustrating for patients who then have to be redirected.  Average waiting times for first new appointments will shortly be published and regularly updated on the Trust’s website for patient information.

Please note that the hotline is for RCHT patients only.

Following patient feedback, we have now implemented a message on the phone system which will tell you where you are in the queue. If there is going to be a long wait, you are encouraged to visit our website at  morrabsurgery.co.uk where you can access Kli Nik, our new system for requesting advice/appointments from a doctor or a nurse, self-help information, or an administration request. This can be accessed 24hrs a day (actioned during working hours).

Under 65 Flu Clinics

We are aiming to secure enough under 65 flu vaccines towards the end of October - Please be assured that we will contact you to book your flu vaccine when we have clinics available. We are not booking that far ahead as in previous years as we have not always received the vaccines on time which has resulted in having to cancel appointments.

Please note for the 50-64 year age groups - The vaccine will be offered initially to those in the 'at risk' category, any remaining vaccines will then become available.  Please check the website for details and clinic times.  We would ask you not to ring the surgery as reception will not have details of availability.

Tier 3

Following the government’s announcement yesterday that we are now in Tier 3, we are once again operating a locked door policy.

Christmas Message

Christmas Opening Hours

Morrab Surgery will be closed on Christmas Day Friday 25th December, Boxing Day Saturday 26th December, and bank holiday Monday 28th December.

Please call 111 for non-urgent medical advice and 999 in a medical emergency.
For COVID testing, please call 119.

We would like to wish all a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.

Dr R Senior

With great sadness we learnt that Dr Rob Senior passed away last weekend.
He served this community and Morrab Surgery as a full time GP for 40 years.
Rob worked in an era where delivering babies at home, and working through the night before a long day at work was common place.
Despite his huge workload, he was always patient, kindly and compassionate to all, and he will be remembered with great fondness and respect.
We will not see his like again.
Rest in peace Rob

Flu Vaccines for 50-65 year olds

***50 – 65 YEAR OLD PATIENTS***

Over the past few days, you will have heard about the flu vaccine being available from GP surgeries from 1st December.

We have yet to be informed when this vaccine will actually be delivered to the practice so we are unable to offer flu clinic appointments at this time.
As soon as a delivery date is confirmed, we will update www.morrabsurgery.co.uk and our Facebook page with dates of clinics and how to book, so we would be grateful if you could please avoid phoning the practice until then.
Please be assured, we will contact all eligible patients to offer this vaccination.

Thank you for your continued help and co-operation during these difficult times.

Morrab Surgery Partners and Staff

# hello my name is

You may have noticed us wearing new name badges on your recent visit to the surgery.  # hello my name is... is a campaign founded by Dr Kate Granger MBE while she was receiving treatment for terminal cancer.  Our very own Dr Barrett said:

"Hi all
Just wanted to say how proud I am to wear our new name badges. 'Hello my name is......'
I knew and worked with Dr Kate Granger MBE who initiated this campaign after she was sadly diagnosed with rare sarcoma in her 30's. She was so upset by fellow health staff/professionals who didn't introduce themselves that she started the 'hello my name is...' campaign. The campaign took off nationwide and she received an MBE. She sadly died in 2016 but she was a good doctor and it is lovely to see her work continued.

New Computer System

During the week beginning 25th January, we will be migrating to a new computer system which will improve the services which we can offer to patients. During this transition, there may be some disruption to appointments, registrations and prescriptions, so we ask you to please bear with us during this time.
Thank you for your understanding.

Social Prescribing

Social prescribing involves helping patients to improve their health, wellbeing and social welfare by connecting them to community services which might be run by the council or a local charity.

Ellie Mosely is a Social Prescriber who works closely with our surgery and she has lots of information including some activities over the Christmas that can be viewed here.

Patient Hotline - Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust

Please see below communication sent on behalf of Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust:

Patient hotline – elective care (Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust)

The patient hotline for elective care was established to field enquiries from patients who are on an elective management pathway at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust (awaiting new or follow-up outpatient appointment, diagnostic or elective admission) and are concerned that their condition or symptoms are deteriorating.  Patients may have had their treatment postponed as part of the response to the Covid-19 outbreak or simply be awaiting their first appointment or next steps in their treatment.

The aim of the hotline is to:

  • avoid patients having to return to their GP to raise concerns about their condition or symptoms with a view to expediting care
  • ensure there is clear route in for enquiries where patients are concerned about their condition
  • help keep patients safe whilst waiting for treatment as all enquiries and concerns will be assessed by a clinician

The hotline can be contacted by phone on 0800 0357777 or by email to rcht.cornwall.patienthotline@nhs.net.  Enquiries are then directed to the appropriate specialty for clinical review and appropriate action.

The hotline is not resourced to field general enquiries regarding waiting times or Covid-19 issues, but are receiving multiple calls from patients simply enquiring about waiting times for treatment, many of which have been advised to phone by their practice.  To help avoid this, the Referral to Treatment (RTT) current waiting times are now available on the RCHT website – https://www.royalcornwall.nhs.uk/visiting-hospitals/outpatients/im-waiting-for-an-outpatient-appointment/ - and these will be regularly updated.  Please can practices advise patients to visit the website if their symptoms are unchanged since referral and they purely want to know about the waiting times

Just for info and in case you were wondering....

Whilst some patients are being seen in the surgery, this pandemic has meant that a lot of work is having to be done remotely. Since the 1st March 2020, the doctors have carried out 27,572 phone consultations. This is on top of the day to day running of a busy GP surgery, issuing prescriptions etc

Covid-19 Vaccinations

We are currently calling in patients in cohort 6.  For those in cohort 5 - we had been advised that they will be sent a letter to attend a mass vacination centre (Stithians).  If you are unable to attend this appointment, please wait for our call - we will contact you when we are told to.

Please do not call the surgery phones to enquire about your vaccination, we need the lines to be kept clear for the surgery clinics and emergencies.  You can email us on morrab.covid@nhs.net and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

We are getting through our patient list as fast as we can, please be assured you will get a call.

Thank you

New Staff Appointments

We would all like to welcome some new members who have recently joined the Morrab Team:

Dr Gaby Dorbin and Dr Madeleine Bennett have both joined at the beginning of the year, they had to hit the ground running and have both proved an enormous assett to our team already.

Caroline Edmunds, a Mental Health Practitioner is an excellent boost to the team in the current circumstances and we look forward to having her expertise on board.

Rosie Roberts and Tanya Liddiard both join our hardworking reception team and Charlotte Pinnock is an excellent support to the admin team.

We are also delighted to announce that David Ramsey will join us as our in-house Practice Pharmacist, to deal with all routine prescription issues and queries.

In addition to this, we would like to congratulate Ali Mills on her promotion to Reception Manager, a very capable appointment and we wish her good luck in her new role

2nd Covid Vaccinations

We have had a large volume of calls today regarding second Covid vaccines, which has resulted in patients with emergencies being unable to get through.
The second vaccines are being given at around 11 weeks after the first vaccine and we will contact you nearer the time.
PLEASE DO NOT ring the surgery to ask about the second dose, we will contact you.

We are currently contacting patient's who are eligible for their Covid booster, starting with those who are most vulnerable.  Where possible we are booking these at the same time as the flu vaccinations, but it depends on the supply.  We are using Pfizer only and you will not be contacted until 6 months has passed since your 2nd jab.

New HCA

We would like to welcome new Healthcare Assistant Shakira, who will be joining Tammy and Kat in supporting the clinical team.

***BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY***

Emergency departments saw a significant rise in attendances over the recent bank holidays. This created a huge pressure on the system.

Therefore Morrab Surgery will be providing URGENT ONLY, ON THE DAY appointments on Monday morning between 9am and 1pm. This is NOT for routine issues which could wait until the practice reopens fully on Tuesday 4th January. The door will remain locked and only patients who have been invited to the surgery by the GP will be allowed to enter.

So for an emergency appointment/help on Monday morning, please contact either 111 or call 01736 363866 and you will be put through to Out of Hours who will put you in touch with the surgery.

For any non-urgent help, you can contact the surgery 24hrs a day via Kli Nik on our website www.morrabsurgery.co.uk where you will be triaged by a clinician and contacted within a few days

Opening Times

Flu Clinics 2021

We are currently sending out invites for flu vaccinations, so if you are eligible, you will be contacted either by text message or by letter.

Under 65 vaccinations
Please be assured that we will contact you to book your flu vaccine when we have clinics available.

Please note for the 50-64 year age groups - The vaccine will be offered initially to those in the 'at risk' category, any remaining vaccines will then become available.

Please check the website for details and clinic times.  We would ask you not to ring the surgery as reception will not have details of availability. You can email morrab.flu@nhs.net for any flu related queries.

Due to Covid-19, we are needing to put certain measures in place:

  • Turn up at your given time, do not attend early or late as you may not be allowed in
  • Please do not bring family members with you (unless they have an appointment booked at same time as you)
  • You will have your temperature checked on arrival. If you have a raised temperature, you will not be able to have the vaccination
  • Please wear a face mask
  • You may be asked to exit via a separate exi

Important changes to routine and non-urgent blood test appointments

All GP practices are affected by the current national shortage of blood tubes and are taking urgent steps alongside our hospitals to prioritise their use for people with the greatest clinical need. This includes testing for serious conditions such as cancer.
We are following national guidance which has been issued in response to the shortage. As a result, we need to cancel and delay a number of patient appointments for blood tests deemed routine or non-urgent. If you have a routine blood test appointment the reception team at the surgery will be in touch directly if they need to cancel your appointment, this will be by phone or by text message.
Please be assured that appointments will be rescheduled once the situation has improved, and in line with national guidance. There are a few things you can do if you are affected by this change:

• Keep checking our website for regular updates – we will be sharing the latest patient information here as soon as we receive it.
• Check your phone for messages from us – we will also be using our patient text service to keep people informed.
• Please don’t call or contact us with questions about routine blood tests – we are experiencing exceptional levels of demand at the moment, and your cooperation will help us to reach those without smartphone or internet access with this critical information.
• Do get in touch online if your condition worsens or changes so that we can prioritise your blood test if necessary following clinical review
The changes are likely to be in place for at least four weeks. We will keep all our patients regularly updated as the national situation changes. We fully understand the frustration this is likely to cause, and apologise for the inconvenience.

Thank you, Morrab Surgery

Covid Restriction Update

Dear Patients/Visitors to Morrab Surgery,

From 19th July, nothing will change at the surgery, patients will still be asked to wear a mask, socially distance and staff will continue to wear PPE.

As a practice, we need to ensure that we continue to look after our sick and vulnerable patients and allow our staff to carry out their roles in the safest way possible.

We continue to remain open as we have done throughout the pandemic and we continue to offer consultations via Kli nik, telephone, face to face and via video consultation.

We hope that you understand our decision and will help us to keep our surgery as safe as possible for all users.

Patient Access App

Patient Access connects you to the surgery by allowing you to order repeat prescriptions, access your immunisation and allergy history and in the future enable you to book appointments via your mobile or home computer.

You can register online using YOUR OWN email at https://www.patientaccess.com/ and then come to the surgery with a photographic ID.  Once we have seen this, we will email you with your code which you must keep confidential as it will allow access to your personal information.

Parents/guardians will have responsibility for registering children under 12, but must provide the evidence to proove parental responsibility to gain access codes

Sharing Patient Data

You may have heard mention in the press of sharing patient data.  If you are worried about this, or would like more information, please click on the link below which will hopefully answer your questions.

https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/data-collections-and-data-sets/data-collections/general-practice-data-for-planning-and-research/transparency-notice

If you do not have the facility to print forms/access online, please ask at reception for an opt out form to complete.

Organ and blood donor register

From October 1st 2021, GP resgistration forms (GMS1 forms) will change so you must opt out if you do not wish to be a blood or organ donor.  If you do not opt out, you are automatically put on the donor register.  You can find out more information and how to opt out here.

Routine Appointments

Due to the increasing rise in Coronavirus cases, we will be trying to minimise attendances in the surgery. You may receive a text message or a phone call from the surgery to cancel your routine appointment. The most efficient way to contact the surgery remains via our website and accessing Kli nik, this is triaged by clinicians and you will be given the appropriate outcome.

We thank you for your understanding during these times.

Veterens

We are delighted to announce that we have now been given Veteran Friendly Practice Status by the Royal College of General Practitioners.

This means that, as part of the health commitments of the Armed Forces Covenant, we have a dedicated clinician who has a specialist knowledge of military related health conditions and veteran specific health services. This is important in helping ex-forces to get the best care and treatment.  If you are ex-forces, please let your GP know to help ensure you are getting the best possible care

You can find out more on our Veterens page here
